Noise cancellation and accent translation: the AI layer nobody puts in the RFP.

Noise cancellation stopped being differentiated when Krisp shipped it as a plugin in 2022. Native UCaaS suppression from Zoom, Teams, Meet, and RingCentral is now baseline. The 2025-2026 shift is real-time accent translation — Sanas, Krisp Accent Localization — controversial, delivering measurable CSAT lift for offshore agents, and raising a disclosure question the operator has to decide up front.

Noise suppression is table-stakes and bundled. Accent translation is the 2025-2026 shift and comes with a disclosure question the operator has to decide before signature.

Four model classes, not one category

“Noise cancellation” conflates four distinct audio-AI model classes that a mid-market operator sources differently. Noise suppression — dog barks, keyboard clicks, HVAC hum — removed from the outbound audio stream. Voice isolation — the speaker's voice separated from other voices in the room (Microsoft Teams calls this “voice isolation” specifically). Speech enhancement — bandwidth extension, dropout repair, and clarity boost on lossy connections. Accent localization — real-time modification of the agent's accent as speech streams, delivering the caller a locale-matched voice. The first three are commoditized in 2026. The fourth is not, and the buying decision for the fourth is not a technical one.

The native-versus-standalone question

Zoom's suppression is on by default with three sensitivity levels. Microsoft Teams noise suppression ships in low, medium, and high modes, plus voice isolation as an AI feature on the top Copilot tier. Google Meet has native noise cancellation. RingCentral, Zoom Phone, and 8x8 ship equivalents on the contact center side. For an operator with agents on any of those platforms, standalone Krisp only earns the seat when (a) agents work in genuinely noisy environments the bundled suppression cannot handle, (b) the operator wants a single suppression layer across a mixed CCaaS + UCaaS + Zoom + Teams estate, or (c) the operator needs the additional Krisp features — meeting transcription, call summaries, or accent localization — that the native bundle does not include.

Accent translation is the 2025-2026 shift

The category-defining product is Sanas, which raised Series B and C rounds on the premise that offshore and nearshore agents delivering support to US callers face a measurable comprehension penalty that a real-time accent modification layer removes. Krisp Accent Localization shipped comparable capability as a Krisp-side feature. The reported CSAT deltas in BPO and nearshore engagements are real. The ethics questions are also real. Journalism outlets including Vice/Motherboard and Nearshore Americas have covered the identity, bias, and CX-honesty dimensions extensively. The operator has to decide, before signature, what the disclosure policy looks like — to agents (who may see their voice modified against a US locale profile without consent) and to callers (who may be unaware they're speaking with a modified voice). There is no right answer, but there is a documented answer, and it belongs in the vendor selection artifact, not the after-signature retro.

Buyer-side. Supplier-paid. Buyers pay zero. Compensation has zero weight in the Cardinal Index scoring inside the Cardinal Method. The disclosure policy on accent localization is a strategic decision — it does not sit in the vendor-selection matrix, it sits above it.

Deployment patterns by agent geography

Three shapes recur. Home-agent overlay. Predominantly domestic agents working from home. Native UCaaS/CCaaS suppression + NVIDIA Maxine SDK (for developer-side custom integrations) covers most cases. Standalone Krisp when the incumbent CCaaS doesn't bundle equivalent. Nearshore-to-US accent layer. Agents in Latin America, Philippines, or India delivering support to US callers. Sanas or Krisp Accent Localization is the buy. Disclosure policy determines whether this is procurement-viable or reputational risk. Domestic native + hardware. On-premise agents with dedicated headsets. Poly Voyager, Jabra Engage 65 series (with hardware-side NC), plus native UCaaS suppression. Do not stack a software Krisp layer on top of hardware NC — the audio artifacts get worse, not better.

The buyer artifact — a 5-question fit rubric

The audio-AI fit rubric

  1. Agent distribution. What percentage of agents are remote or home-office (not in a controlled acoustic environment)? Under 30%, native suppression usually covers the field.
  2. Measured (not estimated) impact. What percentage of interactions have quantified ambient-noise or accent comprehension impact? Anecdote does not clear this hurdle.
  3. Bundle coverage. Does the incumbent UCaaS and CCaaS already ship equivalent suppression? If yes, standalone spend is duplication.
  4. Disclosure policy on accent localization. Written policy for agents and callers, decided before contract signature. This is not a vendor question; it is a firm-level question.
  5. Pricing shape against 2026 native roll-in. Model against the likelihood that a major CCaaS ships bundled accent localization within the contract term. Cap the standalone commit accordingly.

What breaks — three modes

Duplicated cost. Buying standalone noise cancellation when the incumbent UCaaS or CCaaS bundle already covers it. A $5-8 per-user-per-month Krisp line item across 300 agents is $18-29K/year of overlap the CFO will find at renewal.

Undisclosed accent translation. Accent localization deployed without a written agent or caller disclosure policy is not a vendor risk. It is an ethics risk that becomes a PR risk when the deployment is reported. The disclosure decision belongs to the executive team, not the procurement team.

Hardware plus software NC collision. Modern headsets (Poly, Jabra Engage 65) apply hardware-side noise cancellation before the audio hits the operating system. Adding a software NC layer on top double-processes the same signal. Result: voice dropouts, breathy artifacts, degraded intelligibility. Read the headset vendor's guidance on which software suppression to disable before rollout.

Three rules

Rule one. Assume the bundle covers noise suppression. Justify standalone spend against measured (not estimated) ambient impact.

Rule two. Decide the accent-localization disclosure policy before the RFP. If the answer is “we haven't decided,” you're not ready to buy.

Rule three. Do not stack software NC on top of hardware NC on the same channel. Choose one layer per channel and disable the other.

In short

  • Noise suppression is bundled in Zoom, Teams, Meet, RingCentral, Zoom Phone, and 8x8. Standalone Krisp earns the spend only when the incumbent bundle doesn't cover or a mixed estate needs a unified layer.
